Goldmark lays out priorities

for next administration

Science, sustainability and economic opportunities important to Commissioner-elect

Olympia – Public Lands Commissioner-elect Peter Goldmark today laid out his vision of how decisions should be made in the management of Washington’s public lands and resources.

“There is a nexus where science, sustainability, and economic opportunity meet and that point is where the policies of the Washington State Department of Natural Resources need to be,” said Goldmark. “We face a terrible national economy and a difficult state budget, but those challenges will provide opportunities for green jobs and renewable energy on our public lands.”

It is Goldmark’s goal that decisions made at Washington State Department of Natural Resources would reflect his vision of having sustainable public lands that provide economic opportunities today and for future generations.

In laying out his vision, Goldmark highlighted four priorities to help guide his new administration:

  • Make decisions in the public interest and with the public’s knowledge.
  • Protect the resources we have now.
  • Strive for sustainable use of public lands.
  • Use our public lands to create economic opportunity.

“Environmental protection can and must happen during challenging economic times. We need to make decisions now with our children’s grandchildren in mind,” said Goldmark.
